I
was born in Fiume which was then in Italy and is now Rijeka in
Croatia. As a post war refugee I studied architectural design in
Venice at the Academia Belle Arti. I went on to study
architecture further at the Instituto Universitario di
Architettura in Venice alongside Bruno Zevi and Carlo Scarpa.
Frank Lloyd Wright and his 'Theory
on the Nature of Materials' was a great influence on me as were
Scarpa and Walter Gropius. Miles van de Rohe influenced my vision
of art and understanding the beauty of structure rather than
colour. Another influential book was 'How to look and see Art'
by Saper Vedere.
I worked as an artist etcher and
engraver for 25 years. I enjoy photography and also watercolour
work and etching, which I studied at Morley College more
recently.
