Artist Biography - Monica Larkin

After training at Goldsmith's College of Art, University of London, obtaining a National Diploma of Design in Illustration, then one in Embroidery and my Art Teacher's Diploma, I taught art and needlecraft in various secondary schools and adult education institutes in Greenwich, Eltham, Sidcup and Bromley. I then became a lecturer in Embroidery and Crafts at Stockwell College of Education in Bromley for student teachers.

When this college closed after my being there for thirteen years, I trained at Sir John Cass College, London Metropolitan University in Jewellery and Enamelling, gaining their Certificate of Jewellery and Enamelling and a Higher National Diploma. I then taught these subjects as well, right up to the present.

I also took part in the two and a half year Millennium Embroidery Project - an eight panel applique and embroidery hanging depicting the history of Greenwich from Roman times to the present, now owned by Greenwich Council.

Nature in all its forms of texture and colour has been my design inspiration - I see things organically rather than geometrically - I am particularly interested in animals, so they are often my subject matter. Applique hangings in textiles and enamelling on jewellery or as small pictures by the painting method, are my favourite activities and I cannot imagine not having one 'in the pipeline'.

For some time I sold work at craft fairs and local galleries, but now I exhibit mainly at local art exhibitions.
