Artist Biography -
Ann Hillary |
| I
took a BA Hons in Fine Art painting, with printmaking, at
Goldsmiths, London. The mysterious, occasionally ominous
presence of ordinary things seen with intensity, led me to make
a series of large realistic oil paintings, which, although they
contained no fantasy element, had surreal overtones.
Later I came across the work of
the American realists Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth, and the
French photographer Henri Cartier Bresson. I felt in sympathy
with their subjects and their manner of deailing with them.
My main work continues to be
detailed realism, painted over a period of weeks, yet it
represents isolated moments and has an unexplained narrative
content. |

Cafe, Kingsdown by Ann Hillary |
Through drawing, watercolour and
photography I record places, people and things and in recent
years have made lino prints from these starting points,
including a black and white series of the Dome, viewed from
places on the Thames Path from Woolwich to Greenwich. The
technique of lino-cutting changes the emphasis of my work:
rhythm and pattern take over from tonal qualities of light and
realism becomes less important.
Since my time as a student I have
made life drawings and through them, freed from my usual
subjects, I can experiment with technique and mood.
I have had successful solo
exhibitions of my work and shown in mixed exhibitions, including
earlier, as an invited guest of the London Group and at the
Herbert Gallery, Coventry.
